30 October 2017
It gives me great pleasure to be sending you the report letter from Ofsted following their one day inspection of Samuel Cody Specialist Sports College on 12 October of this year.
As you will read the Inspectors were very impressed with the school and the education staff deliver to your children both academically and in their school and life skills.
In addition to this formal letter the Inspectors fed back to me during the day and at the end of the inspection. Both inspectors were overwhelming in their praise for the pupils, especially in the pride they showed in their own learning and in their school. Throughout the day they spoke to many pupils who were able to clearly answer the questions put to them about all aspects of school life and were so positive about their life in school. One Inspector actually said the group of children she formally interviewed were ‘an absolute joy to be with’.
You should be so proud of your youngsters as they showed what confident, hardworking and skilled young adults they are growing into.
Staff were praised for their high quality teaching, meeting the needs of all pupils and ensuring progress was being made. In addition the positive, respectful relationships between adults and pupils and pupils and pupils were remarked upon. Governors were also praised for their determination to make sure all pupils in the school receive a first class education.
We have taken on board the few points for development from the Inspectors. We have already been looking into our assessment system for current Year 7-10 which clearly shows an individual’s progress but is not yet refined enough to show the comparison of progress across cohorts. This we agreed with the Inspection team was a work in progress. We will be looking at how we report to the Governors certain individual spending and will make sure this is clearly recorded in the Governors’ minutes.
As a leadership we will be discussing writing across the curriculum. Currently all teachers teach English through their own subjects and we will be trying to establish working practices that allow more ‘free writing’ opportunities without turning pupils away from subject specific learning which they enjoy, as we know writing is an aspect our pupils find the most difficult.
I would like to thank you for your continued support for the school and the input you gave to the inspection. Working closely with parents and carers is so important to the development of pupils’ skills for life and something we feel we do well with you.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions regarding the report which I would be happy to discuss with you.
I hope this letter and report show you how impressed I am with all stake holders in Samuel Cody Specialist Sports College but most of all how very proud I am of all the pupils and staff.
