Music Intent

In music we aim to be as hands on as possible and allow for music in as many areas of the school day as possible. Many of our children learn through rhyme and song so we utilise this when teaching new ideas and aspects, for example learning the days of the week and the months of the year, the order of the planets, etc.

In Early Years and Key Stage 1 singing forms part of Circle Time in the mornings, where the children learn nursery rhymes and songs connected to topics.

In Early Years the children will explore aspects of the music curriculum through the Early Years Foundation Stage areas of Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design.

Key Stage 1 also has structured Curriculum music lessons as part of afternoon topic sessions for some of the topics covered on a 2 yearly cycle. This will involve learning about tempo and rhythm using instruments and body parts and learning songs connected to the topics, such as the Planets song and London’s Burning.

Key Stage 2 music connects with the topics still and focuses deeper on the use of instruments and creating their own pieces and looking at simple forms of notation, as well as thinking about different styles and types of music from around the world and different musical artists.
